The maple trees in our neighborhood have started dropping their dry, but still green leaves. Where Fall brings leaves ready to go back to the earth, these seem like casualties of a very long, hot, dry summer. It makes me worried for our urban ecosystem.
Today I went for short walk around the woods and was greeted by many signs of spring! I saw banana slugs, stinging nettles, and flowering Indian Plums. Summer will be here soon!
An historic building (127 years old) stood here until recently. SE Belmont St. in Portland is nearly unrecognizable. This emptiness will soon be filled and it will be as if the history of this place never happened. This building was home to many things before it was torn down, but now it will be something new, unknown, and represents the change that is the new normal of this city.
